Food Label Reading Exercise

Being able to read a food label will help you identify what nutrients are in foods, and hence work out if it is a good food for sport. This is an exercise that I have done with student groups and with athletes. You can provide them with some foods to analyse, or send them off into a supermarket to find particular foods and fill in the table below with answers.

What food group does it belong to?

What are the first 3 ingredients?

How many grams of carbohydrate does it have in one serve?

How many grams of protein does it have in one serve?

How many grams of fat does it have in a 100g serve?

Which nutrient supplies the most energy?

What other nutrients is this food a good source of?

Is it a good recovery food?

Does the food contain any claims?
